The transaction's final undoing comes after Bloomberg
said the government started investigating the companies of
Allen Stanford, the Houston billionaire who controls
Stanford International Bank. Such investigations have risen
after allegations the SEC failed to heed "too good to
be true" warnings about Bernard Madoff's
investment returns.
The investment arm of Standford's companies offered a
one-year, $100,000 offshore "CD" at a 4.5 percent
annual yield as of Nov. 28, according a posting on the Web
site Thursday. A one-year, $10,000 certificate of deposit
purchased at JPMorgan Chase & Co. would earn 1.5
percent, according to its consumer banking Web site.
Bloomberg reported it wasn't clear how the Stanford
International "CD" investment differs from U.S.
certificates of deposit, which are safe vehicles fully
insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
Emageon, employer of 450 people who make software for
tasks such as analyzing X-rays, declined to comment on
Stanford International Bank on Friday.
The Conde Cavaliers took to the streets to begin Mobile's non-stop Mardi Gras season of parades & balls.
It's a fabulous party and everyone is invited. If you have never visited Mobile during Mardi Gras you really should come.
It's a really fun tradition. And when I say tradition it really has a lot of tradition involved every year that would not be obvious to visitors. From driving downtown along the same route, to parking in the same area each year to standing in the same spot.
I have friends who watch all the parades under the same oak tree every year, and have for years (I'm sure 20+) Now on Joe Cain Day (the Sunday before Mardi Gras), the Monday before Mardi Gras and on Mardi Gras Day they watch the parade in front of the motel that they stay in first. But then it's to the tree they go to watch the parade two more times (coming and going). You can always find them. They are always in the same place. My daughter texted me last night from the oak tree. There is now a second generation headed to the same oak tree each year.
I have other friends that begin each evening parade at the same bar and then watch the parade on the same corner outside the bar. Others meet in front of other hotels, at the parks, and in front of designated office buildings or parking lots. All around downtown, the crowds are so much more organized than they look like. The riders on the floats know where to look for their friends.

I'm starting a new Real Estate/Investment Company in Alabama. I need a business name. Any Suggestions?
Apr 24, 2008 by Happy Heart | Posted in Renting & Real Estate
My husband and I are starting an Investment business in a small town. We would really like a name for the business but haven't been able to narrow down our names to any particular 3. We will be purchasing old homes to fix up and resale/ new homes to help young buyers get started and property that's been let go (cosmetically speaking). We plan to do some rental type investments and also some multi plex apts. We want a catchy professional looking name. This will be the name that will help us make it in our business or not be taken seriously. We'd like a logo to go with it too. Any suggestions will be appreciated in our search for a better life. Thanks
I would go with what makes Alabama, Alabama. Look at the state symbols. ( I live in a concrete city, new york) Im thinking. Tarpon Financial ( if you like fishing, thats the state fish) Or Monarch Financial (as in the butterfly Alabama is known for never forget that name ) Black Bear Financial ( noone forgets the strong bear that everyone in the state grew up with) Oakleaf Financial ( one of the state flowers ) Blackberry Financial ( also has the obvious Blackberry cell phone connection with all the well to do and business people as well as the state berry)

Is a Feminist bookstore a good investment?
Mar 16, 2007 by MaryCheneysAccessory | Posted in Gender & Women's Studies
I have a business opportunity to start a national chain of Feminist bookstores called "Sappho's Closet." Along with the normal outlets of San Francisco and Boston, we are thinking of opening stores in Huntsville, Alabama; Casper, Wyoming; Peoria, Illinois; and Altoona, Pennsylvania. I am not sure about this, but I think it is time to open the eyes of fellow Americans. What do you think?
Deidre...how cynical of you.
alot of women read it's an excape for some others it may be what's lacking in life of it may be the fantasy
there are alot of good thingsthat could become of your store and there are lot of different things you could do
hold a book meeting once or twice (like a book club) so readers can share what their books were like and maybe it would lead to more puchases after the meeting
there is alot of ideas for this type of investment i would say go for it

Are there grants for someone to start up a first time business, restaurant/bar... and where can I find them?
Aug 26, 2006 by jameywoods | Posted in Small Business
I've never owned a business, and my income is not that great. I would like to start a restaurant/Bar in Alabama. I was looking into Small business loans, but wanted to see if there might be some Federal Grants for first time business starters first, hoping it would allow me to have to borrow less. I haven't qualified for a small business loan yet, as I wanted to research what type of investment I'm looking at first. If anyone has suggestions or answers, it would be greatly appreciated.
It is hard to find grants to start a business. There is no such thing as first time business owner grant. You are better off exploring other possible sources of funds.
Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK - lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.
Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.
Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.
Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html...
"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."
Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business -- THERE'S NONE.
http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show
Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program
Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs
For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.
