Does anyone know about banking laws for the State of California?

As in how many times can a check be redeposited? For example I know that in Illinois it is two times. Let's say you write a check, it is returned, and they redeposit it over and over...is there a limit in the State of California in banking rules/laws/regulations on how many times a check or e check can be presented? Serious answers only please!
I am stunned by the answers, but as Steve the Attorney wrote, one has to wonder what is in all that fine print that we would be reading till we keel over if we were to read it all. Scary. Very scary how banking laws benefit only the big guys and the working poor are just that.

There are no state laws on the amout of times a check can be deposited. State banking laws are found in Article 4 of the Uniform Commercial Code and are nearly the same in every state. However individual banks may have a policy as to how many times they will accept a check for deposit or collection, The customer agrees to these policies when he or she opens the checking account. Ever wonder what is in all that fine print?

Can anyone suggest a Southern California Bank with the lowest fees especially for retirees.?

I am getting ready to retire and am finding Washington Mutual bank fees high in everything you do. I am trying to find out which Southern California bank or any bank with the lowest fees for transactions of all types.

Best California Bank for Debit Card With My Circumstances?

I don't know if the fact that I live in California will really make a difference..

Anyway, I'm currently with Westamerica Bank but it really really bothers me that I can't view my account online for free.

Basically what I'm looking for in a bank is:

Debit card (I don't want a credit card, I don't trust myself)
No annual fee
No minimum balance required (as in I can go as low as $0.00 with no charges unlike BoA that has the $1,000 min, balance)
Free online account access

And I think that is about it. It doesn't sound like much, but I honestly havent been able to find any that meets those requirements.

Thanks to anyone who helps!

I think you'll have hard time finding a bank that lets you go to zero balance occasionally and not charge you a service fee. Nearly all require some kind of minimum balance (like BofA) to have no service fees. They have to be able to make money somehow to cover the service costs of your account.

Another alternative out there, though, is going with a prepaid card. They give you a lot of good features that you need from a "bank" account, but with some differences. They have a monthly fee, but some are pretty reasonable, especially when you compare to a bank that charges overdraft fees. If you're taking your balance to zero occasionally, then I'm guessing you may get hit with a $35 overdraft fee a few times a year. I have a ReadyDebit prepaid card and it has no overdraft fees. Their monthly fee is $5, the same as the new WalMart prepaid card (I always look for alternatives to WalMart). You get online account access for free and there is no minimum balance. You can deposit your money onto the card with direct deposit as well as a few other ways (Green Dot, PayPal). Hope this helps you.
