GOP lawmakers, aided by a small group of Democrats, have been pushing the tax breaks for years, along with such companies as NBC Universal, Genentech and Intel, as well as the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Taxpayers Assn. They say the breaks are an incentive for businesses to expand operations in California -- or at least not to leave.

The lawmakers have previously sought unsuccessfully to leverage their votes on a state budget, which can pass only with a two-thirds majority, for the tax breaks. This year they had more leverage, because the compromise requires them to support $14 billion in temporary tax hikes on average Californians, something they had vowed never to do.

Those tax hikes will force most California adults to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars more each year in a combination of higher vehicle license fees, sales taxes, gasoline taxes and income taxes. Dependent-care credits claimed by millions of families would be cut by about $200

Can store credits expire in California?

If a California retail store offers a store credit for a returned product, is it legal to have it expire? If so, how soon and under what conditions?

In 1997, a California law was passed preventing gift certificates from ever expiring, but what about store credits?

Please provide references for your answer.

Basic Rules (Civil Code section 1723)

Each store can set its own policy on refunds and exchanges. To attract and retain customers, many stores have liberal return policies.

Many stores will exchange nonsale items whether you buy with cash, check, or credit card, and some will give you cash or credit refunds.

Many sale items are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable.

If you exchange an item for an item that costs less, the store may require you to spend the remainder of the money in the store.

How do semester credits at California community colleges tranfer to Cali universities with quarter credits?

I want to transfer from San Diego City College to UCSD. Would my semester credits transfer to quarter credits one for one. So a 3 semester credit course at San Diego City college transfers as a 3 quarter credits to UCSD?

The simple answer is that 3 semester credits equals 4.5 quarter credits. The ratio is 1:1.5.

Likewise, in a semester system, you need 120 credits for a Bachelor's degree. In a quarter system, you need 180 credits for a Bachelor's degree.

Please don't quote me on this but I vaguely remember my own answers when I was confronted with this problem going from a semester system in California to a quarter system in Washington state.
