DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — When Maria Ruiz-Santana talks about the day a suicidal gunman shot her in the throat during her geology class at Northern Illinois University, she sounds as if she's describing a nightmare from long ago.

"It feels like it happened to me years and years ago," said a calm, upbeat Ruiz-Santana, 21, who was among the 25 people shot in the Cole Hall lecture.

But in reality, it's just been one year.

On Feb. 14, 2008, Steven Kazmierczak fatally shot five students before turning the gun on himself.

NIU had a day of activities planned for Saturday to mark the anniversary, including a commemoration ceremony, candlelight vigil and memorial wreath laying.

Kazmierczak's victims and their families have found different ways to cope. Some, like Ruiz-Santana, found closure in a visit to the still-closed Cole Hall. Joe Dubowski has left his late daughter Gayle's bedroom just as it was that day. Harold Ng, who was struck in the head by shotgun pellets, has turned to his faith.

I have 150 credits earned from India. I have a bachelor degree in accounting from india. I satisfy both the requirements(24 credits of business courses and 24 credit of accounting courses). Out of 150 credits 30 credits are taken at Institute of chartered accountants of india. Will Illinois board of examiners transfer all of my credits? Will I be able to sit for the CPA examination?

First of all, you need to have your academic credentials evaluated by a board-approved foreign education evaluation service, such as FACS, ACEI, Joseph Silny, etc. The evaluation will have to show that your bachelor's degree and college coursework in India are deemed to be equivalent to a bachelor's degree and applicable accounting or business-related coursework from a regionally or nationally accredited US college or university. If the evaluation shows that the coursework that you have done meets the US equivalent of 24 semester hours of upper division or graduate level accounting and 24 semester hours of business-related courses, then you should be able to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination. If Illinois will not allow you to do so, check any of the other 54 states or jurisdictions to find one that will allow you to sit as a candidate of that other state or jurisdiction. Scores from the Uniform CPA Examination ARE transferable to any other state's board of accountancy when you are ready to seek certification or licensure. Good luck!

Anyone ever transferred to Western Illinois University? How strict are they with accepting college credits?

I want to transfer to this college because it is closer to home and cheaper. I am curious if they are strict with accepting college credits from other universities. I am a junior and really hope they take most of my credits. Have a 3.5 gpa and staying at my current school is no longer an option (just got out of the service and moved home)

I just got accepted for the spring semester. If you have Illinois college credit from community college or public university they have to accept the credit. Make sure the credits you have can be applied towards your major. The WIU website has an online catalog for the classes needed for each major. You must have at least 30 credit hours from WIU to receive a bachelor's degree. In terms of them being strict, My cumulative GPA is a 2.3 and they let me in. Enough said.
